Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) – A Drug Recognition Expert or Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE) is a police officer trained to recognize impairment in drivers under the influence of drugs other than, or in addition to, alcohol. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) coordinates the International Drug Evaluation and Classification (DEC) Program with support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The West Monroe Police Department has a DRE Instructor, who manages the Louisiana Highway Safety Traffic grant and Traffic Safety Program.  We also have another DRE on a patrol shift.

Community Police – This unit has the mission of developing community partnerships, engaging in problem-solving, and developing programs within the community to foster communication and engagement.  Although all police officers are involved in community policing, the West Monroe Police Department has three officers assigned to the division.  The community programs include the Citizen’s Police Academy, “Are You Ok?” Program, “Do the Right Thing Program,” Vacation Watch, Public Information, Community Emergency Response Team, Shop with a Cop, Coffee with a Cop, School Resource Officer Program, and participating in numerous community events. Community Police also spend time recruiting for the department.

We have the goal of developing positive relationships with our youth.  Therefore, we utilize the School Recourse objective of bridging the gap between the youth and the police. This led to the development of a youth camp each summer consisting of various educational and experiential processes that help meet the goal of mentoring.

Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.) – The West Monroe Police Department works closely with Volunteer Louisiana. Through them, we have developed a CERT team. Louisiana Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks. Basic CERT trains individuals in disaster response skills such as fire safety, volunteer team organization, and disaster operations, so they can assist first responders and/or care for themselves and others during a disaster event. Our team also aids with the American Red Cross and many volunteer opportunities in our city and parish.
