A groundbreaking was recently held for a public fishing pier that will be constructed as part of the Downtown West Monroe Riverfront Marina project.
The public fishing pier is made possible through a grant from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Sport Fish Restoration Program as well as private funds raised from the “Picture This Campaign.”
Newly-appointed La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Madison Sheahan was in attendance at the groundbreaking and expressed the department's excitement over being part of this project.
The fishing pier will extend approximately 185 feet from the bank of the Ouachita River to include a partially covered, floating dock as the primary fishing access point. The fishing pier is part of the overall development of a downtown riverfront marina project, which came as the result of community feedback in the completed Downtown West Monroe Streetscape Master Plan. The first phase of the marina project, Campbell’s Landing, which provides boat slips, opened to the public in spring 2023.
In addition to the groundbreaking, a special presentation and announcement was made regarding the 2024 Ouachita RiverFest, scheduled to take place in downtown West Monroe on April 26-27, 2024. Proceeds from Ouachita RiverFest will go toward the marina project.
A check for $25,000 was presented to Mayor Staci Mitchell from proceeds of the 2023 Ouachita RiverFest. Those funds will be used for the fishing pier project.
